A walk inside nature and history of ancient Paper Mills
The shorter path to reach the natural Reserve of the Mills Valley. Choosing to start from Amalfi you will walk uphill and to come back to Amalfi you will take some ancient steps downhill. You can also choose to start from Pontone situated at higher altitude so you can walk downhill ending the path in the center of Amalfi.
Starting from the little square of Pontone follow the indications for the”Valle delle Ferriere” better know as Mills Valley; passing for the little medieval hamlet, district of the most ancient city of the Amalfi Coast: Scala. You will take the path after a piece of city road. Along the first part of the path you will enjoy the great view of Amalfi from behin walking among lemon trees, typical cultivation of these places.
After one hour you will find a junction where turning right you will follow the path that reach the natural Reserve; after around 10 minutes, passing by the river Canneto, you will be in the more famous place of the valley with its waterfalls and its rare plants. In the raining days is more easy to see the Salamandrina terdigitata fascinating amphibian that live all the year in the reserve. You will back again to the junction this time turning right going downhill untill Amalfi. After one hour you will see the ruines of the ancient paper factories where they produced the famous handmade paper of Amalfi, at the end of the path you will arrive at the paper museum. We are already in the center of Amalfi, in five minutes you will reach the Duomo and from the Flavio Gioia square you can take a public bus that go to Pontone or you can reach Pontone taking some steps uphill.
