Very close to the archeological site of Pompeii is Castellamare di Stabia, a big town at the foot of the Mount Faito. The first historical date are from the eight century BC; the original settlement was located on the hill of Varano that took the name of Stabiae. Its peak was reached in the Roman period, when the city was surrounded by walls and was mainly devoted to the production of agricultural products, thanks to its fertile soil. Castellamare is famous since ancient times for the healing properties of the thermal waters, it has more than 28 different types of natural mineral waters. One of the main economic activities of the city is based on the construction of boats, whose boatyard is the oldest factory in Italy. Among the various boats built it is recalled the AmerigoVespucci, the training ship of the Italian navy.
